In July 2016, the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will hold its first meeting since governments adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All eyes will be on its discussions regarding follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the presentations of the first governments to volunteer for national reviews of their progress in implementing the SDGs.continued…

UNGA Elects Non-Permanent Members of UNSC

28 June 2016: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) elected Bolivia, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Sweden to serve on the UN Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term beginning on 1 January 2017. Following five rounds of voting, Italy and the Netherlands proposed sharing the fifth open seat, with Italy serving in 2017 and the Netherlands in 2018. UNICEF Report: Invest in Equity as a Strategic Imperative

28 June 2016: Unless the world focuses more on the most disadvantaged children, 69 million children under five will die from mostly preventable causes, 167 million children will live in poverty and 750 million women will have been married as children by 2030, according to a UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report. ‘The State of the World’s Children’ 2016 highlights progress in getting children into school, alleviating poverty and halving under-five mortality rates, but it stresses that this progress has been “neither even nor fair.”continued…

UNGA President Updates Preparations for Human Rights Debate

24 June 2016: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Mogens Lykketoft has released an updated concept note and programme for the High-level Thematic Debate (HLTD) on Human Rights. Field Perspectives Highlighted for QCPR Negotiations

24 June 2016: UN Member States and representatives of the UN system discussed the Delivery as One (DaO) approach, the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) process, the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) system, and the simplification and the harmonization efforts for business practices, during the fourth module of the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR) Training 2016. Ocean Cleanup Testing Equipment to Remove Plastic Waste from Oceans

23 June 2016: The Government of the Netherlands has awarded €500,000 to Ocean Cleanup to support the test of a prototype of equipment designed to remove plastic debris from the oceans. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has highlighted this project as part of efforts to address plastic waste in the world’s oceans.continued…
