SuRe® – the Standard for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure was formally launched at COP21 in Paris on 9 December 2015 (more information). SuRe® is a global voluntary standard which integrates sustainability and resilience aspects into infrastructure development and upgrade. At a time of rising demand for infrastructure services globally, the implementation of SuRe® will support the better preparation of bankable sustainable and resilient infrastructure projects and help bridge the gap to the financing sector. This in turn should enhance the financing of climate-friendly technologies and projects worldwide.

Dr. Bruno Oberle, Swiss State Secretary for the Environment, opened the session by highlighting the role that tools like SuRe® can play in ensuring that investments in infrastructure contribute effectively to a sustainable future. Hans-Peter Egler, CEO of GIB, explained how SuRe® can add value for project developers, financiers and public sectors institutions while enabling impact measurement and supporting project comparability. Maryke van Staden of ICLEI then explored how projects part of the Transformative Action Programme (TAP) facilitated by ICLEI could use SuRe® to demonstrate anticipated benefits. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion with Gino van Begin (Secretary General, ICLEI), Thomas Salvadori (Senior Banker, Natixis) and Tikender Panwar (Deputy Mayor, City of Shimla, India) and moderated by Susanne Nolden (City of Bonn).
