We’ve got a lot of news on the smart grid front this week, including new takes on making the utility-to-home technology connection. Take the project underway in Georgia, where Emerson and smart grid and energy management partners are installing home power meters and wireless controls, all connected via broadband. Billions of dollars in federal support are lined up behind rural broadband. Will rural electric cooperatives and other country utilities be able to ride that communications pathway into the home? Ontario province and home energy management startup Energate just announced a 1,000-home broadband-enabled project as well. We’re also seeing moves from home energy management to commercial-scale, as in WegoWise’s shift from multifamily housing to commercial properties, or big industrial and commercial demand response provider EnerNOC picking up on the Green Button initiative, which has been focused on standardizing energy data for homes.
