A Note from the Editor
By Preston Gralla

The end of the year is always a time to look back and forward, and that’s what we do in this special edition of the GreenerComputing newsletter. First, our managing editor Matthew Wheeland takes a look back at the top stories of the year in Green IT. It was a wild year: It started off as usual for green goals and went to a sense of increased foreboding and gloom-and-doom predictions for the coming months.

However, as he explains, Green IT has been somewhat immune to the gloom and doom of 2008. We saw green design for electronics and IT equipment, including significant work on Energy Star ratings, and the EPEAT rating system hitting the 1000th product certified. There were also moves to deal with e-waste, and data centers became increasingly greener. Check out his blog for the year’s news in review.

By all indications, the coming year should be a breakout for green IT. The economic meltdown, a big new stimulus package, and advances in technology will all combine to put Green IT directly at the center of how corporations operate.

So what should you expect in the coming year? Find out with my Top Ten Predictions for Green IT in 2009. I expect a big boost for Green IT due to the economic meltdown and upcoming stimulus package, believe that CIOs will start to become CGOs (Chief Green Officers), believe that the Green Cloud will begin to replace the data center, and more. Check out my blog for all ten predictions.

From all of us at GreenerComputing to you, we hope your next year is a good one … and we certainly expect it to be greener.
