“Ethical Markets highly recommends this report, the best so far, on how to assess corporate business models for their level of dependency on users’ data and how they are responding to the new challenges including the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  A must read for ethical investors.  See also  our TV program “Social Media in the Crosshairs” with NASA Chief Scientist Dennis Bushnell.

The Data Privacy Puzzle

How shifting consumer attitudes and regulatory responses may impact corporate data strategies — and portfolio performanceData-driven companies are increasingly important to almost every portfolio and many of our day-to-day lives. The so-called FANG stocks — Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Alphabet (formerly Google) — collectively make up nearly 15% of the S&P 500, and a broad swathe of other companies increasingly mine data to enhance their business strategies. Many consumers dislike being tracked and profiled, and as a result some regulators have taken action to address those concerns.

Potentially shifting consumer attitudes and regulatory responses could have implications for portfolio performance over both the short term, as investors react to the latest data privacy breach, and the longer term as corporate strategies adjust to changing operating environments.

In our new report “The Data Privacy Puzzle,” commissioned by the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute, we assess four possible scenarios for the impact of data privacy concerns on companies and offers eight company-specific case studies. Importantly, the report provides a framework for investors to monitor corporate responses to this rapidly shifting, high stakes environment.

We are certain you will find this report interesting if you use Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and/or Google or if your portfolio includes these stocks.
