“Ethical Markets highly recommends this Newsletter on FAIRR’s growing worldwide influence and their ground-breaking research on sustainability issues facing livestock-raised meat and aquacultured fish foods.  We began covering FAIRR’s financial indices and new metrics in our annual Green Transition Scoreboard: “Capturing CO2 While Improving Human Nutrition & Health: 2018“.  We share FAIRR’s concerns over the unsustainability of the global foods system and add our own research on the need to  expand the use of plant-protein foods and beverages and include all the complete protein halophyte salt-loving plants (e.g. quinoa, China’s salt-tolerant rice, Salicornia, etc) which grow in 22 countries without pesticides or fertilizers and whose long roots capture CO2 better that any other methods except old growth forests.  We are members of FAIRR and its logo in on www.ethicalmarkets.com

FAIRR warns of ESG risks facing aquaculture sector

On World Environment Day FAIRR urged the fish farming industry to take action on its growing environmental and sustainability risks with the launch of the report ‘Shallow returns?’. Despite 6% annual growth, the $232 billion global aquaculture sector could be undermined by climate change, a dependence on wild fish stocks for feed, excessive use of antibiotics and poor governance. The Financial Times and the Guardian covered the launch of the report. Read the report here.

Third update on antibiotics engagement launched

The report, published in May with a foreword by Dame Sally C Davies FRS, Chief Medical Advisor to the UK government, is the culmination of a three-year FAIRR-led engagement supported by a $4.9 trillion investor coalition. As part of the engagement, over 70 investors asked 20 global food giants including McDonalds and Yum! Brands to reduce antibiotic use and curb the risk from growing antibiotic resistance. Before the engagement, only one company had a regional policy on antibiotic stewardship that was limited in scope. Now, all companies have one in place or in development. Read the report here. The report will provide a progress update on FAIRR’s Sustainable Protein engagement with 25 global food companies and industry insight on how companies are beginning to diversify their protein sources towards a low-carbon product portfolio.
