“Ethical Markets highly recommends this original and brilliant article “Challenges Ahead in 2021 and 2022 ”by our Advisory Board member Dr. Marc Luyckx, who advised the European Commission for many years and is the kind of deep thinker we need today.  Luyckx points to the alternative paths following the global shock of the coronavirus, which has jolted most societies out of any hope that there can be a restoration of the formerly unsustainable industrial models and lifestyles.  Will societies succumb to the kind of authoritarian response seen in Hungary, China, the Philippines and Russia, and the “Age of Surveillance Capitalism“ described by Prof. Shoshona Zuboff?

Or will we see COVID-19 as following the role of so many viruses in our human past, (which created some 10% of mutations of our human genome, which were often beneficial), as described by Prof .Nafeez Ahmed, University of Sussex, UK, in “The Light at the End“ which  we posted recently?

We agree with Dr. Luyckx and believe that this self-imposed feedback from our planet, along with the floods, fires, rising sea levels of climate change, signifies our limited cognition and is forcing rapid growth of human awareness, a sort of cultural mutation.  As I and physicist Fritjof Capra wrote in our “Pandemics: Lessons Looking Back from 2050“ a more positive outcome from this shocking tragedy is that humans will recognize the fault lines in our unsustainable past: social inequality,  racism, misogyny, and a particular weakness, in confusing money with real wealth  and  “progress” as measured by the faulty cash-flow metrics of GDP growth (based on the 7 deadly sins!) rather that the age-old systemic ethics of “The Golden Rule” (now encoded in the UN’s Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs).  We recognize that it is entirely possible for humans to re-structure their societies so as to provide equitable, sustainable livelihoods and lifestyles without killing ourselves and destroying out home planet.  All hands on deck now!

CHALLENGES AHEAD IN 2021 & 2022

PART 1: A SUCCESSFUL SHOCK STRATEGY: THE CRISIS WILL ALSO BE ECONOMIC

Naomi Klein wrote in 2008, The shock doctrine[1]. She explains that this organized political and economic shock manages to astound the population. And it allows politicians to pass authoritarian laws, under the pretext of protecting the frightened population. In a very recent video[2] she explains also that this politic and economic Shock could also produce a positive world shift to a new world paradigm.

This will be the theme of our reflection.

Our hypothesis is that we are experiencing an admirably well-organized ” Shock Strategy”. It has indeed succeeded in stopping the economy of 4 billion citizens on earth. A remarkable achievement.

And so we are probably experiencing only the first phase presented as a Pandemic. This Shock strategy has been openly presented in Davos in 2020. Cool.

And the coming phase could be an economic crisis of very great magnitude.

  1. Possible major economic crisis in 2020 (or 2021)

There is indeed a 40% chance that a major economic crisis will affect the United States and Europe, but also the rest of the world in different ways. And this in the months or years to come. The IMF has been warning us since 2018.

  1. Currency crash (strong but silent devaluation of the $ and €. That is to say a loss of 25% or more of the purchasing power of citizens in a few days).
  2. Stock market crash, a major crisis in the stock market in US and EU.
  3. And bank crash. 30% of the banks in the US and Europe are in danger.

The whole economic system could collapse.
