The Water End Game

Jay OwenEarth Systems Science

This decisive presentation “The Water End Game” by NASA Chief Scientist Dennis Bushnell is required reading for all those engaged in water issues and oceans policy, drawing attention to  the overlooked potential of salt-loving plants (halophytes) which can be grown on scrub and desert land irrigated by saltwater, using only the free daily photons from our Sun.  Also see our TV show with Dennis Bushnell and Dr. Carl Hodges, President of the Seawater Foundation “Investing in Desert-Greening” at www.ethicalmarkets.tv  and for classroom use at www.films.com

The over-investments in freshwater agriculture , desalination, obsolete types of irrigation, water treatment and sewage facilities, by public and private sector groups, in the World Bank’s Blue Economy (2017) and other IFIs constitutes a block to fully examining the potential of halophytes . This kind of special interest incumbent blockage, including intellectual, academic and technical biases, is typical of the “theory-induced blindness”  described by Daniel Kahneman in his “Thinking Fast and Slow” (2011) at Princeton, University. We at Ethical Markets advocate more focus on the potential of halophytes, including in our Green Transition Scoreboard “PLENTY OF WATER” (2014), downloadable at www.ethicalmarkets.com
