First SDH system in Sub-Saharan Africa

One of this year’s high points was the inauguration of the first solar district heating system in Sub-Saharan Africa in mid-May. This 600 m² flat plate collector array was installed on the roof of a Witwatersrand University building in Johannesburg (see photo). 2018 also brought increased interest by commercial customers in other parts of the world: At least 37 large (>350 kWth) SDH systems were commissioned in those 12 months to supply heat to district heating networks or big buildings, according to the latest edition of the Solar Heat Worldwide study. This was a significant increase compared to the 17 installations started up in 2017.

In addition, a Solar Academy webinar by the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme will soon give a complete picture of market and industry trends from 2018. The 1.5-hour session will be held on Wednesday, 3 July 2019, at 2 pm GMT. Click here to find out where to register online a week before the event takes place.
