Call for Collaboration Contributors

Opportunity Collaboration Challenges are extended 2.5 hour work sessions in which Delegates intensively share missions and common issues. Topics explore effective multi-dimensional poverty-alleviation strategies. To enroll in a Challenge topic or theme, contact OppColl COO Topher Wilkins at [email protected].

For a complete roster of Challenges, see the Resource Library.  Each 2.5 hour session follows a common format that is designed to elicit a genuine search for collaborative solutions and to spark cross-sector insights and partnerships.  Lectures, PowerPoints, static presentations, speechifying, organizational imperatives, pitches, filibusters and egos are banned.
Colloquium Curriculum for Executive Leadership Seminar

The popular Colloquium for the Common Good is the Opportunity Collaboration’s signature seminar on executive leadership, economic justice and the good society. The 2010 Colloquium explores the practical tension between traditional philanthropy and the increasingly popular idea that social enterprise provides the best means of alleviating poverty.

The debate over philanthropy and social enterprise is a challenge to create “capitalism with a human face.” In the ideal, market consciousness combines with people consciousness to produce leaders who recognize human nature as it is and work to produce practical solutions to the problem of poverty.

The 2010 Colloquium readings advance a solution to poverty which involves understanding the engines of both capitalism and human need. In the readings, Delegates will hear the voices of the disenfranchised, but also the voices of those who believe they have found a route to empowerment. For more information, visit Colloquium for the Common Good.

Companies & Causes; Sign-Up Now
Companies & Causes is the Opportunity Collaboration’s platform for sharing resources. In a structured, but relaxed, evening of presentations, Delegates publicize organizational opportunities and specific requirements needed to scale their institutions. Delegates with resources (consultants, grant makers, investors, philanthropists, field experts and others) describe how they can help.

Whether a nascent idea or investment-ready, from new board members to strategic alliances, from consultants to collaborative partners, ecosystems of opportunities for greater impact in the campaign against poverty are presented. To sign-up, visit Companies & Causes.

Between the Covers
Each evening at the Opportunity Collaboration after-dinner discussions on a book, article or writing of interest to a Delegate occur after dinner in quiet, comfortable seating areas throughout the leadership village. Book or article topics cover a wide range of non-fiction and fiction works about poverty-related themes. Often Delegates lead discussions about books they have authored.  For more information, visit Between the Covers.
Economic Achievement Award Winner

Shari Berenbach, President & CEO, Calvert Social Investment Foundation, will receive the Opportunity Collaboration’s 2010 Economic Achievement Award at a festive evening presentation ceremony.  The Award honors “an exceptional leader with a passionate commitment to combating poverty via methods that are creative, collaborative and efficient.”

“Shari is a force of nature,” says OppColl CEO Jonathan C. Lewis.  “As chief executive of Calvert Foundation, she has been a consistent and unwavering voice for social and economic justice.  Via innovative thinking, collaborative action and an open heart, Shari has increased economic opportunities for thousands upon thousands.  We are proud to honor a leader who so abundantly displays the social investment ideal.”

Topics cover a wide range of policy, geographic, organizational, entrepreneurial and poverty-related themes. Delegates showcase their ideas, organizations, expertise and policy topics of interest. To suggest a topic or present a Cluster-Fork, contact Katie Drasser, Director, Policy Dialogues, Opportunity Collaboration (email: [email protected]).
Collaboration Network News
CNN is the Opportunity Collaboration’s on-site television channel broadcasting short videos 24/7 into every Delegate’s room during the Opportunity Collaboration.  All confirmed Delegates are invited to include 3-5 minute video clips about their organization, mission and work.  For details, visit: http://www.opportunitycollaboration.net/resource/cnn/.

Important Pre-Event Information
At the website, enrolled 2010 OppColl Delegates are strongly advised to review Curriculum & Networking opportunities, Registration Fee policies, Travel & Arrival information, Leadership Village accommodations and family-friendly Traveling Companion & Toddler services and pricing.  Key reminders:

(a) OppColl makes all arrangements for hotel accommodations. There is no readily available off-site housing.  The leadership village is a 37 acre, guarded enclave chosen for its quiet ambience, spacious grounds and modern rooms.

(b) Come prepared to showcase your innovation, your institution, your work and your mission. With no plenary speeches, no panels, no powerpoints allowed, serious networking and dialogue is the top priority.
See Change Comes to the Opportunity Collaboration

See Change, a professional evaluation firm and 2009 OppColl Delegate, is conducting interviews of selected 2009 Delegates in order to better determine the nature of successful collaboration, document some of the 2009 accomplishments and provide future Delegates with “learning case studies” and models.  The research results will be published at the OppColl website this Summer and also be mailed to 2010 Delegates with the advance Colloquium readings.

Collaboration Invests in Local Ixtapa Community
Playa Viva (“guilt-free luxury in an environmentally-conscious resort”) is a local economic development project in which the Opportunity Collaboration has invested. Townspeople have started small businesses in support of the development (e.g., a nursery providing plants for the restoration of the eco-preserve). 50% of the construction workers are drawn from Juluchuca, Mexico, whose 500 residents belong mostly to the same four families. Reservations at Play Viva before and after the Opportunity Collaboration are available.
