Financing for Development Conference Opens in Doha
Today, the Secretary-General opened the Follow-up Conference in Doha with a call for boldness, and a will to lead in ‘taming’ global economic turmoil while the General Assembly President said that the transformation of a ‘faltering’ economic and financial system is a moral duty.

Civil Society Gathered in Doha Issues Joint Declaration; Calls on UN Member States to Invest in People-Centred Development
More than 250 representatives of civil society organisations gathered in Doha, Qatar from 26-27 November for the Doha Civil Society Forum under the theme ’Investing in People-Centred Development’ in advance of the Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development. At the conlclusion of the Forum they adopted a joint declaration and selected a representative who delivered their views to UN Member States at the main Plenary of the official Conference this afternoon.
Working Out of Crisis: Aligning Finance with Decent Work and a Fair Globalization
The unprecedented international government response to the financial crisis has focused on rescuing the financial sector from collapse. However, what is also urgently needed is a “rescue plan for working people and the real economy” within a broader framework to align financial governance with the 2005 global UN commitment to “full and productive employment and decent work for all” to support “a fair globalization”.
