Looking towards Nature Positive in 2023

2022 was a fantastic year for biomimicry with exciting progress made to (re)connect with nature. We watched as the world continued to step up: from our friend Yvon Chouinard donating ownership of Patagonia to ensure profits are used to address climate change, to last month at COP 15 in Montréal, where roughly 190 nations signed on to protect 30% of the planet’s land and oceans by 2030. In the words of our co-founder Janine Benyus, “Here we go!”.

We’ve been waiting for and working towards this moment for the last 25 years—quietly doing the work to understand how an organization can begin to chart their path towards being regenerative. Perhaps more importantly, this time has given us the opportunity to reinforce our partnerships and mutualisms essential to support the work ahead. The transformative actions necessary to move towards being Nature Positive cannot be done alone, and we’re thrilled to have an amazing constellation of partners and collaborators—including Arizona State University, Biomimicry for Social Innovation, EcoMetrix Solutions Group, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Ford, HOK, Interface, Jacobs, Microsoft, and many others. And of course, we have our most important partner, nature, on our side providing 3.8 billion years of profound wisdom, ingenuity, and R&D.

Throughout the year ahead, we remain dedicated to helping others learn from nature and for nature to drive action toward a Nature Positive world. For us, this is not an impossible destination, but an actionable plan—we understand the journey of how to get there. Below, our most recent case study outlines a pathway forward, including an initial pilot, and we are thrilled to now have over 20 projects currently underway.

Together with our partners and our Project Positive CoLab, we look forward to sharing not only stories and examples from these projects, but also resources for organizations moving towards being regenerative: from journey maps, to assessment and measurement tools, playbooks, crosswalks, and more. We hope our paths cross on this regenerative journey in 2023!
