“Ethical Markets fully supports FAIRR and will be posting all of its innovative research covering the global food sector’s changing strategies, shifting from livestock-grown meats, farmed fish, dairy products toward the emerging sector of plant-proteins and alternative, healthier foods which are also more sustainable for our planet and climate.

Our own research in this sector continues in our upcoming Green Transition Scoreboard: 2019, building on our 2018 report “Capturing CO2 While Improving Human Nutrition & Health”.  Shifting our global food supply from unsustainable livestock-raised meats and a small group of monocultured crops dependent on the planet’s 3% of freshwater is no longer viable.  We cover all the new opportunities for healthier diets while saving and protecting our planetary resources.

Latest updates from the FAIRR Initiative

2018 was a year of tremendous progress for FAIRR. We reached out to new companies and new countries, expanded our global reach of members and media exposure, and launched the ground breaking Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index.

It was a year that saw us use the power of our network to engage 20 global restaurant chains from McDonald’s to Wendy’s to improve antibiotic stewardship in their meat and dairy supply chains. We also worked with 25 food multinationals to diversify their protein sources. In 2018, we convened the world’s largest investor group calling for zero deforestation in Brazil’s Cerrado savanna.

We would like to thank our investor network for their continued support: their work has been instrumental in achieving these successes. We look forward to broadening and deepening our industry engagement in 2019.

Four initiatives to watch: 2019

Climate and water risk: new collaborative engagement

On 25 January, FAIRR launched an investor engagement representing $6.5 trillion of assets under management that urged six large fast food companies to set tough targets to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and water usage of their meat and dairy suppliers. The engagement, launched in partnership with US non-profit Ceres, asks the companies to explain by March how they plan to enact meaningful policies and targets to de-risk their meat and dairy supply chains. The launch was covered by media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, Voice of America and The Guardian.

Aquaculture industry: new investor research

Aquaculture, or fish farming, has recently overtaken wild fishing as the predominant method of seafood production worldwide. Ten of the largest aquaculture firms have recorded an average five-year shareholder return of over 400%. Yet little is understood about the emerging sustainability risks associated with this growth. New FAIRR research in spring 2019 will analyse the issues set to shape the future of this fast-growing industry. Register your interest in the launch.

Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index: second edition

FAIRR will launch the second edition of the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index in the summer of 2019. The updated index will build on improvements to the methodology to ensure the assessment of corporate performance is robust. We have interviewed over 30 external stakeholders to input into our methodology, including investors, Index company representatives and subject matter experts. If you are interested in participating in direct engagement with the companies assessed, please reach out to Iman Effendi, Research and Engagement Manager.

Antibiotics reduction and protein diversification: accelerating corporate progress

FAIRR has been engaging with 45 global companies across its antibiotic use in livestock and sustainable protein supply chains engagements. This year, we will release updates on our progress, with exclusive individual company analysis for FAIRR’s Investor Members.
