Mention Green IT to a CIO or IT pro, and ask what they first think about. Most likely the answer will be to green the data center by reducing energy costs. That’s all to the good, because there are considerable costs there that can be saved, with big benefits for the environment.
But by itself, saving energy costs is not the total solution. Enterprises need to do far more than just that. This week, David Daoud, research manager with IDC, looks at the next stage in the evolution of Green IT, towards sustainable computing practices. He explains that sustainable computing emphasizes the value of the three R’s — reducing the demand for new technology by extending equipment lifecycles; reusing assets when possible through redeployment, resale or charitable donation; and ensuring a zero-impact approach to recycling.
