Thomson Reuters Foundation at
the Global Conference for
World Press Freedom Day

2022

On Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 May 2022, journalists and press freedom advocates will convene in Uruguay at UNESCO’s Global Conference for the celebration of World Press Freedom Day. The day serves as a moment to mark the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate the state of media freedom around the world and the challenges journalists face; and to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of journalism.

This year’s theme of ‘Journalism under Digital Siege’ will focus on the ways in which recent developments in surveillance, data collection and artificial intelligence (AI) are impacting journalism, freedom of expression and privacy around the world.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Media Freedom Coalition- supported by the Foundation as Secretariat – will be hosting panel discussions at the Conference (location details below), which will also be livestreamed for those who register in advance.

Developing Effective Tools to counter gender-based online harassment

Journalists around the world are facing increasing levels of online violence in attempts to discredit or silence them. This barrage of abuse and harassment is not only damaging to women’s careers in media, but is increasingly weaponised to undercut public trust and access to accurate and unbiased journalism.

While technology has inadvertently given way to increasing online violence, innovation can also be leveraged to protect users from harm. How are internet platforms, social media companies and civil society organisations effectively limiting harassment of journalists – particularly women? What more needs to be done to end this onslaught of abuse?

At this session, the Thomson Reuters Foundation and Google’s Jigsaw will spotlight a new tool, TRFilter, which enables journalists to aggregate abusive content received on social media, block or mute users at scale, and download a log which can be shared with third parties as needed.

Digital authoritarianism and technology-facilitated threats to journalists and human rights defenders

A panel of government officials, civil society organisations, human rights activists, digital specialists, and journalists will discuss these threats and the role governments and industry should play in defending freedom of expression, online and offline.
