Efficiency Quarterly: ACEEE’s Policy Newsletter

EFFICIENCY QUARTERLY | May 2017

Welcome to ACEEE’s policy newsletter. Uncertainty dominates the policy outlook in D.C. these days. The White House’s first budget proposal indicated deep cuts or complete elimination for many energy efficiency programs, and the announced backtracking on vehicle fuel standards risks billions in consumer savings at the pump. However,  the recent FY2017 budget deal that maintains energy efficiency programs was welcome news, which we hope bodes well for FY2018. With uncertainty reigning in DC, leadership by states and cities on energy efficiency is more important than ever.

ACEEE just released the 2017 City Energy Efficiency Scorecard, ranking 51 of the largest US cities on their energy efficiency initiatives. Boston ranked first for the third edition in a row, followed by New York City and Seattle. Los Angeles and Portland tied for fourth place. This year’s most improved cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, Kansas City, and Phoenix. Overall, 32 cities improved their scores since the 2015 report. However, no city came close to a perfect score, so each still has room for improvement. Check out our City Scorecard page for the full report and one-page summaries for each city and region, and find updated local policy data in our State and Local Policy Database.

We also recently released our 20th annual Greener Cars report, highlighting the cleanest and dirtiest 2017 car models. The “greenest” list was swept by plug-in electric vehicles for the second year in a row, with Hyundai’s Ioniq Electric in first place.
