Canadian pensions are retiring fossil fuel investments

For decades, Canada’s collective retirement savings have been heavily steeped in the fossil fuel sector. But new research reveals that pension funds have been quietly offloading the majority of their oil and gas investments and onloading climate solutions, write Corporate Knights CEO Toby Heaps, Ed Waitzer and Derek Eaton. In a new report, Corporate Knights analyzed 12 of Canada’s biggest pension funds in partnership with the Smart Prosperity Institute, The Natural Step Canada and a panel of experts. The analysis found that over the past decade, these funds have dumped their dirty stocks to the point where they now make up less than a few percent of total investments.
