A statement by Elly Pradervand – WWSF CEO
Member of the core lobby group since 2005 for a 5WCW

For the past decades, a series of United Nations World Conferences have been tracing the way and catalyzing action for change on many fronts with resolutions and declarations to reduce violence, promote sustainable development and peace, advocate for human rights, to name a few.

The Joint Announcement on 8 March 2012 by the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser and the UN Secretary-General H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, proposing the convening of a Fifth World Conference in 2015, another world conference on women, not only to speed up implementation of the Beijing agreed conclusions, but to focus on finding solutions to numerous emerging issues, which did not exist in 1995 when the last UN women’s conference took place.

What is missing now is that a UN member state, or several, introduce a resolution for a 5WCW at the upcoming UN General Assembly. Bold leadership is needed and civil society organizations can help in advocating and lobbying governments to move forward.

Join the women of the world and core lobby group*, facilitated by Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen, our mentor, and Ambassador Gertrude I. Mongella, Secretary-General of the Beijing Conference and first President of the Pan-African Parliament, who came to the 56th CSW session in New York specifically as a 5WCW advocate. Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, Senior Special Advisor to the President of UN General Assembly, Former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the UN also supports the initiative in an extraordinary manner.
