Highlights May – July 2017

Canisius College Learning Journey

For the third consecutive year, we hosted a class of students from our partner Canisius College, from Buffalo, NY.  Over the course of a week, the students engaged in activities such as bioconstruction and food processing to learn firsthand how we practice sustainability in our campus, visited the city of Rio de Janeiro and, like every year, helped renovate the local school of the community of Santo Antonio, painting a mural of the Atlantic Rainforest and its native species, together with the students.
Learning Journeys are SINAL’s flagship program. Contact us to design your own!

BMW Herbert Quandt Responsible Leaders Network

SINAL cultivates an environment that facilitates encounters with oneself, others & nature. That is why we are a part of BMW Foundation’s network of places of transformation, and for the 4th time we hosted the Responsible Leaders Network event.

Innovators from Brazil that are creating positive social change gathered to discuss transsectorial solutions to global and local issues. The event was organized interweaving the characteristics of our spaces with the activities to strengthen the relationship between the participants and their potential to collaborate.

Launching the Up Network

As a result of our Entrepreneurship for Good program with The Do School, in which social entrepreneurs from around the world came to SINAL to create innovative solutions to reduce youth unemployment, we are launching the Up Network, to empower communities to create jobs for youths by turning local challenges into business opportunities.

Landscape Regeneration

SINAL is moving forward with a market-driven regeneration venture, designing a viable agroforestry business model that can generate jobs and regenerate the forest in the Baixada Fluminense, the buffer zone between Rio and the Atlantic Forest. We are refining our technical model with the help of Carlos Miller and Jorge Navas, two specialists in permaculture with vast experience in the Amazon. In addition, we have strengthened our partnership with two exemplary regeneration business models: Guayaki, a California-based mate herb company, and Juçaí, a local organic açaí business made with Juçara, a native and endangered Atlantic Forest species.
