New Public Banking ground was broken on September 6th in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For all those who are trying to follow what is happening with Santa Fe’s Public Bank Task Force, we’ll attempt to provide summaries in this newsletter.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Task Force holds public meetings every third week (Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 pm), 500 Market Station, City of Santa Fe. The next meeting is Sept 27th.

Pennsylvania Public Banking Up-date

The proposal to Philadelphia City Council for a Public Bank Feasibility Study is in the final stages of preparation. This study is the next step before a Santa Fe style task force is formed to begin to organize the bank.

Oakland, CA – Public Banks Funding Renewables

Sept 25th 7-9 pm at City Hall (3rd Floor), the people of Oakland will learn how German Public Banks Power Renewables.

Wolfram Morales, Chief Economist for Sparkasse, the association of local public banks in Germany, will explain the role of these institutions in speeding the development of local renewable resources such as solar and wind, at this panel discussion in City Hall. [read more]

Wales Launches UK’s First Development Bank Next Month

Calls have been made to take this a step further – with Welsh banknotes and a public bank. (read more)

The Development Bank of Wales will support businesses in the nation and debate has started on whether this should just be the starting point of a devolved banking system in the country.

Plaid Cymru wants a “genuine” public bank for Wales that can continue to provide a bricks and mortar presence in communities across the nation that are being hit by closures by traditional banking giants [read more]
