“These hearings before the US Senate, 8/1/18, on reforming social media platforms, needed government oversight on foreign propaganda and information warfare are essential to comprehend the extent of attacks from Russia, as well as other autocratic states weaponizing these social media sites. Facebook‘s latest announcement that it deleted 290,000 robot accounts from the Russian Internet Research Agency (IRA) in St. Petersburg, Russia, also noted that their propaganda had already reached 126 million other users and that 28% of the robot sites taken down were still operating on others sites, including Twitter (with 20 times more propaganda accounts than actual human users); Reddit, Tumbler and others. The experts at this hearing called for immediate action to expose unmarked fake political ads targeting swing states, and to counter the sleeper accounts still working to subvert the USA’s November 2018 elections.
