I am working with a medium size Credit Union that has just entered the community development finance world with a spate of new ideas and its first CDFI award. They’re looking assistance with elements of two job descriptions and a recommendation for a search firm.

The first job description is for VP, Affordable Housing Mortgage Lending. The Credit Union already has a functioning mortgage department, they are FHLB and Freddie Direct members. FHA and VA certification is pending. The job description is likely to come out of the nonprofit housing field.

The second position is VP of Community Development/Business Banking. They’re looking for someone to start a small business services department, focusing on loans to non-profits and expanding to other CD loans. This person will also be responsible for a micro branch in a low income neighborhood, in partnership with a local non-profit.

Finally, they’re looking for recruiters that are active with non-profit housing and business lending organizations.

I would much appreciate your sharing your insight.

The Institute for Money, Technology and Financial Inclusion at the University of California, Irvine is soliciting proposals for original scholarly research on mobile money servicesto promote savings and other forms of value storage at scale for the developing world. As mobile money services are deployed around the world, they interact with longstanding, often ancient monetary cultures and practices. The Institute seeks to understand people’s diverse monetary ecologies and repertoires as they navigate new means of saving and transferring wealth.

For this call, the Institute specifically encourages proposals that explore the individual or social perspective in mobile money and agent banking systems. We seek research that uncovers people’s everyday experiences with money (broadly conceived), with the potential to spark transformative innovations in financial access.

Research proposals are especially welcomed that focus on one or more of the following broad topics:
Mobile money services: What is the impact of mobile money technologies on clients’ approaches to saving, storing, and transferring wealth? For example, how can mobile money systems establish trust for people in a cash-based economy?
Social and technological infrastructures and banking: Many second-generation banking models are based on existing retail networks. These existing networks operate within specific social and cultural relationships. What social factors go into the creation and use of retail and agent banking? How do social payments such as tribute, marriage or death payments interact with agent banking or the social and technological infrastructures of second-generation, branchless banking?
Value storage: How does mobile money or agent banking connect to existing or traditional methods of saving and storing wealth? Does mobile money or agent banking help resolve issues that people have had with traditional measures of storing value? Issues include risk of loss, theft, and fraud.
The Institute is interested in proposals for research aimed at impacting the design and implementation of new systems for increasing financial inclusion among the world’s poorest people. We welcome methodological and disciplinary diversity. Past recipients have included anthropologists, economists, design researchers, business school graduates and others.

For detailed proposal format and guidelines go to: http://www.imtfi.uci.edu/imtfi_cfp2010.

Eligibility: This call for proposals is open to all researchers who work in the developing world. Researchers are encouraged to submit proposals that involve a partnership with universities or other organizations in the developing world.

Deadline for submission: October 1, 2010. Decisions will be announced by January 10, 2011.

Proposal submission:
Proposals may be emailed, FAXed or mailed via any postal service or courier to:

Please bring this information to the attention of any young friend, colleague or relative who might want to enter the Professor John Roberts memorial essay competition, open to nationals of ALL countries of the world, students and non-students alike, aged 18-25 on 31 May 2010.

This annual memorial essay competition is dedicated to the memory of Professor John Roberts and supported by Civilisation 3000 and NATO Watch. The competition is designed to give the successful students the opportunity to communicate with NATO Watch associates and supporters on a major topic of international concern. The essay/video should be written from the global citizen standpoint and show some knowledge of history: two of John’s great passions.

Awards will be made at the Shadow NATO Summit in Brussels on 15 November.

Dr Ian Davis said: “It will be a pleasure to judge the first John Roberts Students Essay Competition. It may be that some of the entrants will, one day, be in a position to improve our international security system; there is certainly massive room for advancement. War seems to be as old as human history, but it is not inevitable. We have all the potential tools, skills and laws to abolish war.

Essay title: To abolish war do we first need to abolish NATO?

Has NATO in the past diminished the frequency or the severity of war? Is NATO part of the solution to resolving national and international disputes or is it part of the problem?”

The three winning essays/videos will be published in The Observatory, NATO Watch’s online newsletter, which is read by over 900 transatlantic decision-makers and opinion-shapers. They will also be published on our Website: www.natowatch.org

The deadline for applications is 1 October 2010 (please see competition rules and entry form attached)
