Posting for Los Angeles and San Francisco

JOB POSTING: Senior Associate, Advisory Services

Organizational Overview: With seven offices throughout the US, Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) is working with both funders and nonprofit organizations nationwide to change the way nonprofits are financed. The goal of this innovative thinking is to create a nonprofit sector that has the financial strength needed to provide excellent services to the community.

NFF is bringing about this change by:

Providing organizations with sustaining loans they might not be able to secure from other sources

Sharing our long-term experience on healthy financial planning for nonprofits

Advising nonprofits, through individual and group consultations, in areas of financial planning and management

By advocating broadly to funders and their recipient organizations for an innovative approach to nonprofit financing

Since its founding in 1980, NFF has helped more than 8,000 nonprofits implement sustainable growth and thereby improve their capacity to serve their communities. Headquartered in New York City, NFF has a national staff of more than 60 in offices including Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Detroit and San Francisco.

Position Summary: The Senior Associate will be responsible for the delivery of NFF’s full range of advisory services offerings. As a critical member of a close-working and growing team of local and national professionals, the Senior Associate will be expected to manage a substantial portfolio of work, all while ensuring quality financial analysis, effective communication of key NFF messages, and client satisfaction.

NFF’s Senior Associates have the opportunity to work directly with senior-level financial and strategic decision-makers at a wide range of nonprofits. These clients come to NFF for assistance in evaluating their financial health and assessing their readiness for change or growth. Much of NFF’s direct client work is done through our signature consulting service, the Nonprofit Business Analysis (NBA). The NBA provides nonprofit senior management and board members with illumination and guidance on ways to better balance financial management with program priorities. Through the NBA process, nonprofit leaders gain a deeper understanding of their underlying business dynamics and capital needs. They become better equipped to plan and make decisions that improve their organization’s health and viability.

NFF Senior Associates will serve as lead NBA consultants, conducting rigorous analysis of nonprofit financial statements, communicating complex financial concepts to nonprofit leadership, and preparing and presenting reports with findings and recommendations to multiple nonprofit stakeholders, including funders and Boards of Directors. Senior Associates will also participate in the development and presentation of NFF’s menu of educational trainings, including workshops and clinics. They will be asked, at times, to work on or oversee special projects, including product development and improvement.

Senior Associates must be team players with a strong work ethic, exceptional interpersonal and analytical skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to balance multiple client engagements. NFF’s success relies upon its ability to operate as a “matrix” organization—organized both by geography and department. As such, the Senior Associate will be a core member of a regional team, working to fulfill NFF’s mission in that market, as well as an integral part of a national team of NBA providers dedicated to delivering a high quality product to clients throughout the country. Regular travel throughout the western region will be required, although most can be accomplished through day trips.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Serve as lead consultant for nonprofit clients, facilitating meetings and ongoing dialogue to assess business health and readiness to change or growth

Develop and present reports with key insights and recommendations

Oversee financial and organizational analysis, including sector research

Co-present NFF workshops and other group trainings

Assist in the development and quality assurance of Advisory Services product offerings

Participate in or manage special programs/initiatives as the need arises

Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Requirements for Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s required; Master’s preferred in business, finance, public administration, or related field

4-6 years work experience, preferably in the fields of financial services or consulting

Specialized Knowledge/Beneficial Skills and Experience:

Exceptional written and oral communications and interpersonal skills

Excellent analytical skills

Demonstrated commitment to the nonprofit community and familiarity with nonprofit accounting

Interest and ability to travel nationally, year round

Strong time-management and multi-tasking abilities

Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a close-knit group

Flexible, creative, and patient individual with imagination, enthusiasm and a sense of humor

Self-motivated and results-oriented with drive and initiative

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Hi there ! So, how about a little background information ? Real good then - I hold a BA in Economics and Psychology from the University of Victoria in Victoria, Canada (2005) and a MSc in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden (2008). For the past three and a half years, I’ve been involved with the sales, marketing and business development aspects of Schneider Electric\’s energy management solutions. Based on my personal and professional experiences in the energy efficiency sector, I’m a very strong advocate for forward-looking and holistic energy policies and strategies. I am also passionate about educating stakeholders and shareholders on sustainable business and investment strategies, and the role they play in catalyzing the movement towards a profitable, successful, and sustainable future – a result of my continued involvement with evolving the ideas of Strategic Sustainable Investing. Overall, I’d call myself a sustainability generalist with interests and ideas in many different areas: from biomimicry to behavioural change, greening the built environment to sustainability education, and stakeholder engagement to cleantech – the list goes on! I’m fortunate to reside on the beautiful west coast of Canada where I’m equally active in the outdoors as I am in the sustainability scene, and, as my friends know, I’m always more than happy to have a dialogue around the topic of the day. Feel free to contact me at: nick.g.blandford [at] gmail.com

I am a 2008 MSc graduate in Strategic Leadership and Sustainability from the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. Formerly I have worked in sales and management for Procter & Gamble, Red Bull Energy Drink, and others. I also spent several fun-filled seasons forest fire fighting in beautiful British Columbia.

I currently work in Edinburgh as a research manager for ENDSCarbon and my ‘off’ time, I freelance consult. Over the past 12 months I have written reports for Ethical Corporation on global water insecurity & business risk and supported another report for the UN on investor action towards climate change. I also provide knowledge support on strategic sustainable development for RealEyes Sustainability in Dublin, and run a company ratings service on climate action for the non-profit Climate Counts. Am I a bit busy? Sure, and at such a crucial time in our planet’s history, I wish I could do more.

I deeply love working with my peers and I hope to continue to do so and build on it by utilizing the EMSRG.

Currently, I am passionate about two things, true cost accounting (Theo at Sustainable Ventures deserves credit for adding fuel to my fire), and the handprint concept, which I hope to expand into the mainstream with any and all who will help.

Oh yah, I also like running and playing in the great outdoors. Doesn’t everyone?

If you’d ever like to get in touch, just drop me a line dermco[at]gmail
