Mozn Hassan to Receive Her Right Livelihood Award in Cairo
Egyptian human rights defender Mozn Hassan, who shared the 2016 Right Livelihood Award with her organisation Nazra for Feminist Studies, will receive her award in Cairo on 25-26 March. Hassan was unable to attend the award ceremony in Stockholm on 25 November 2016 due to a travel ban imposed on her by the Egyptian authorities. Since then, the judiciary has initiated a move to freeze Hassan’s and Nazra’s assets, which five UN experts have condemned.
Dr. Monika Griefahn, the Foundation’s Board Chair, said: “In a show of solidarity with Hassan and other Egyptian civil society activists who have been prevented from travelling freely abroad, the Foundation will send a high-level delegation to Cairo to present her with the Right Livelihood Award instead.” The delegation will include European Parliamentarians, fellow Laureates and the Foundation’s Board members

The Marshall Islands and Tony de Brum Voted “2016 Arms Control Person of the Year”
The Republic of the Marshall Islands and former Foreign Ministry Tony de Brum, Laureates of the Alternative Nobel 2015, have been awarded the ‘2016 Arms Control Person of the Year’. Ten individuals and groups were nominated by the staff of the Arms Control Association for their exceptional leadership in arms control and disarmament. Over 1,850 individuals from 63 countries participated in the final selection.
Kingston Reif, director of disarmament and threat reduction at the Arms Control Association, noted “The nomination of the Marshall Islands and Ambassador de Brum and the many votes they received reflects the concern and frustration expressed by many non-nuclear weapon states about the unacceptable consequences of nuclear weapons use, the slow pace of nuclear disarmament, and the growing risks of renewed global nuclear competition.”
Happy 8th Birthday to the Right Livelihood College
On 9 January, the Right Livelihood College (RLC) celebrated its eighth anniversary with eight campuses worldwide. The RLC is the global education and research initiative of universities and the Right Livelihood Award Foundation. It promotes transdisciplinary education and research on social justice, poverty and inequality reduction, and environmental sustainability, together with Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award, who automatically become Fellows of the College. In April 2016, the RLC global network was extended to one more Latin American campus, namely at the National University of Cordoba, Argentina.
Prof. Anwar Fazal, Founder and Director of the RLC, said: “The College was an idea that came from the Laureates. The RLC resonated with them as it aimed to make the knowledge of the Laureates accessible globally through synergistic partnerships with universities, sharing their ideas and experiences of doing real things.” In his new 130-page publication “The Right Livelihood Way: A Sourcebook for Changemakers”, Fazal compiles initiatives and projects of hope to inspire a new generation of civil society leaders and innovators.
Oscar Nomination for The White Helmets FilmThe White Helmets documentary directed by Orlando Von Einsiedel has received a nomination for this year’s Oscar in the Best Short Documentary category. The Netflix movie follows volunteers from the 2016 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Syria Civil Defence in the chaos of war-torn Syria, as they risk their lives to rescue survivors from underneath the rubble. However, the protagonists will not be able to attend the star-studded award ceremony in Los Angeles on 26 February due to the travel ban imposed by US President Trump on seven Muslim-majority countries earlier this month.
