The biggest story of the year continues to be the trade tensions between the United States and China, which the South China Morning Post called “the biggest shift in trade since the Cold War“. Whether or not a deal is reached, understanding China, its economy and its path to development is now critical for any business leader trying to make sense of today’s world.

We are proud to release our latest report detailing an Innovation Model for the Greater Bay Area. Anyone aspiring to global leadership must understand this megalopolis of 69 million people and what might be the most significant development in a decade for Hong Kong, Guangdong and the wider region.

We hope you find the report produced by participants on the Greater Bay Area Young Leaders Programme to have practical applications for your own business, both in terms of overall corporate strategy and of the potential for socially-beneficial innovations.

But understanding China needs to go beyond the headlines, which too often focuses on first-tier cities and macro-economic data. Leaders should seek first-hand experience of how the lives of China’s 580 million rural residents is being transformed. This September, GIFT will take participants from around the world to Qingdao and Shandong Province on our 2019 China Global Leaders Programme, where they will work on a field-project related to a government-led initiative to improve rural livelihood and productivity.

Our cohort worked together to develop a vision for the Greater Bay Area, the eleven cities that surround the Pearl River Delta. The project was developed around the idea of Ecological Civilisation: a society that leverages technology and economic and planning instruments to provide a high living standard within planetary and environmental boundaries.

The GBA will be a pioneer for a people-centric eco-civilisation megapolis, achieved by adopting innovations in technology and the social sciences through multi-sectoral cooperation across the region.
