Today Heather McGhee, President of Demos, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee to oppose the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

She didn’t mince words.

What’s at stake, she told the senators, is nothing less than the way we make decisions about all of the issues we face as a nation, and whose voices are heard in that process.

Stand with Heather & Demos in Fighting Against Big Money In Politics

Our democracy is at a crisis point because the way we fund our campaigns in the U.S. enables wealthy individuals and institutions to take their economic might and translate it directly into political power. The Supreme Court has played a critical role in creating this crisis, by repeatedly striking down common-sense money in politics protections.

Judge Gorsuch has the potential to cast the deciding vote to destroy the few remaining safeguards against big money dominating our politics completely—and his record suggests that’s exactly what he would do.

Judge Gorsuch’s nomination also comes during a time of grave uncertainty over the legitimacy of this administration, as the FBI continues its investigation into Trump associates’ possible ties to Russian interference with the 2016 election. We need a justice who will exercise independence and recognize the value of all of our voices—and there’s no indication that Judge Gorsuch is the right choice at this critical time.

“The American people,” said Heather, “are demanding change to a political system that favors the already-wealthy and well-connected.”

It is thanks to you, Demos’ friends and supporters, that Heather was called upon to testify to the U.S. Senate on behalf of us, the American people. We couldn’t be more proud, or more grateful.
