June 5, 2015

This week’s grid edge roundup comes with a healthy dose of energy storage news, starting with Monday’s roundup of key facts, figures and quotes from last week’s Energy Storage Association conference in Dallas. We took a look at global lithium supplies and new extraction techniques to meet the booming demand for lithium-ion batteries, and highlighted Daimler’s chase after Tesla into the stationary energy storage market. On the investment front, we talked to storage system software vendor Greensmith about its $4.9 million funding, and laid out new funding news and price targets for zinc-iron flow battery startup ViZn Energy Systems. In news beyond grid batteries, Smart Wires raised $30.8 million for its transmission power routing tech, Apple’s first HomeKit products went on sale, UK distribution utilities are turning to sensors and software to deal with challenges in integrating solar and wind power into the grid, and Texas got a reminder of the price it’s paying for slow progress on opening its grid markets to demand response.
