IT pros often have to live up to providing multiple Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for their internal customers, such as for uptime, storage performance, availability, and so on. If the company is a customer-facing one, they have to provide those SLAs to their external customers as well.

With the growing importance of Green IT, a new SLA may become central to an IT pro’s job — energy efficiency. So says Bruce Naegel, senior product manager, data center management group, Symantec Corporation. In his article, “Energy Efficiency: The New SLA,” Naegel says that measuring energy efficiency will need to be managed not as a one-time event, but as an ongoing business imperative. Naegel details exactly what this means for an organization, and for the IT pros who are charged with living up to the new SLA. Read it today, because you may have to manage this new SLA tomorrow.

Here’s a question you probably never wondered about: Do Google searches increase your carbon footprint? As I write in my blog, the Internet was abuzz with a study by a Harvard physicist claiming that in fact, it did, and not an insignificant amount. One report quoted the researcher as saying that a single Google search generates 7g of CO2 — about half the amount of carbon dioxide generated when you boil a kettle of water for tea.

Ah, but is that really the case? Apparently not. I followed up with another blog debunking the claim. Check out both blog entries, then do your Google searches without guilt.
