Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Buddhist Association, Tokyo


Roles involve: Developing SGI’s educational programs and materials related to education for sustainable development, peace and disarmament and human rights.

Representing SGI to international media, creating material for websites, publicity and developing social media policy.

Also actively involved with Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan and various poetry and music related groups in Tokyo.

Interests/concerns: Peace and disarmament, environment education, changing media/social media scene, empowerment of women and girls, self-expression, political engagement

 

Previous experience:

I started my career as a journalist and magazine editor, including three years editing magazines related to retailing and retail design published by stockbrokers in the City of London.

Next I worked as a magazine editor and PR officer for VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas, the UK equivalent of Peace Corps), then overseas work, doing the feasibility study for setting up their program in Cambodia in 1990 and establishing the VSO office in Phnom Penh in 1991.

Between 1991- 93, I worked as Gulf Coordinator for Save the Children (UK), fundraising and recruiting staff for their program in Iraq.

From 1993-97, I was Country Representative for Save the Children (UK) in Cambodia, establishing a program involving child-focused community development, child rights advocacy, HIV/AIDS prevention for youth, and support to government services for vulnerable children.
