Capra Course Webinar: Exploring Transition Design and its Connection to Ecology

Jay OwenEarth Systems Science

After the success of our first webinar with systems thinking architect Steven Bingler at the end of July, we are continuing the Capra Course Webinar series with another conversation planned with Terry Irwin on September 9th.

The Capra Course Webinars are a series of free (roughly) monthly webinars that we are hosting within the framework of Capra Course. They feature Fritjof in conversation with friends and colleagues about their work and life, and are facilitated by Phoebe Tickell, our Course Development Manager.

Discussion topic
The title of the webinar is “Exploring Transition Design and its Connection to Ecology”. Transition Design is a new area of design research, study, and practice created by Terry and colleagues in 2013.

Fritjof and Terry will speak about Transition Design and its connection to Ecodesign, and how it differs from this other discipline. Terry will speak about the Transition Design framework and some of the history of how it was created, and possible plans for the future. There will also be time to explore the conceptual connections between Transition Design and the Systems View of Life as it is taught in the Capra Course.

More about Terry Irwin
Terry Irwin is a Professor and Head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. From 2009-2011 she led the project to integrate design for society and the environment into curricula at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels.

As a consequence of her leadership, the School is the first University Design program to launch a values-based curriculum that embeds ecological principles into areas of traditional design focus (communication, product, environments, and interaction design).

Terry’s research is in Transition Design, aimed at systems-level change and societal transitions toward more sustainable, long-term futures and helped to establish a PhD program in the subject. Terry is currently working with the 12 Universities and 4 design firms worldwide who are integrating Transition Design into coursework, research strands and professional practice with the hope of establishing an international, Transition Design network.
