Much has been made of the billions in business benefits in shifting towards circularity. But traditional metrics used to measure waste management aren’t suitable for more circular activities. At a conference in Edinburgh last week, experts said more data intelligence on material inputs and outputs could help in the development of new metrics for circularity, around factors such as added value, product longevity, service business models, consumption, connectivity and collaboration. The metrics could also sit alongside new sets of indicators reflecting societal behavior and business operations.

This report investigates how a more circular economy can contribute to cutting CO2 emissions. It explores a broad range of opportunities for the four largest materials in terms of emissions (steel, plastics, aluminium, and cement) and two large use segments for these materials (passenger cars and buildings). The key conclusion is that a more circular economy can make deep cuts to emissions from heavy industry — as much as 3.6 billion tonnes CO2 per year globally.
