Business for Democracy and ASBC Lead Effort to Overturn Citizens United v. FEC

The Business for Democracy Campaign, which the American Sustainable Business Council is spearheading in partnership with Free Speech for People is tackling the compelling issue of corporate contributions to political campaigns.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision on January 21, 2010 allows corporations to spend unlimited funds to support or oppose candidates for political office, overturning campaign finance laws in place for decades. The Business for Democracy campaign is an initiative of business leaders and their companies who believe this ruling is in direct conflict with American democratic principles and a serious threat to good government. The campaign supports the four members of the Supreme Court and the 80 percent of Americans who disagree with the decision (Washington Post poll, Feb. 17, 2010).

Great news on chemical reform; work still to do

Great news! This week the U.S. Senate achieved a landmark decision when the Environment and Public Works (EPW) committee passed the Safe Chemicals Act, which provides environmental health protections from toxic chemicals.

This is the first time that there has been a vote on modernizing the nation’s toxic chemical laws since the Toxic Substances and Control Act (TSCA) was enacted in 1976.

The Safe Chemicals Act recognizes the rising public awareness on chemicals exposure and has spurred business innovation, new jobs and profits. It makes a positive impact on all businesses – from investment capital, to R&D, to small business manufacturing, to consumer safety.

This week’s vote was an important action to support businesses’ ability to provide safer products for the American public.

Despite this historic vote, much work still needs to be done.  The legislation now moves to the full U.S. Senate for a vote, which is expected in September or as late as early October.

It is critical that the business voice is prominent in the build-up to the full Senate vote.  ASBC along with our partner coalition will be stepping up our engagement with the business community and creating opportunities for leaders like you to explain to lawmakers and the media why toxic chemical reform is good for business and the overall economy.

Let’s enjoy this week’s victory, but also begin preparing for the next fight.  We’ll be in touch soon to update you on the latest news around the Safe Chemicals Act and how your important voice can be engaged.
