Better Markets Featured in New Documentary on the Financial Crisis
Fellow fighters for financial reform:
We would like to let you know of a very important Frontline four-hour documentary “Money, Power and Wall Street” starting tonight and continuing on May 1 on PBS stations. Better Markets President and CEO Dennis Kelleher appears frequently in the documentary talking about financial reform and the ongoing efforts of Wall Street and its lobbyists to undermine reform in policymaking circles. The documentary examines the actions by an unregulated banking sector that set the stage for the 2008 financial crisis, including the invention of the credit-default swap that led Wall Street to make wild bets in the housing market. It also will cover the steps taken by government officials during the crisis and the actions by the Obama administration to institute financial reform.
Better Markets also has been active recently in court action defending Dodd-Frank against Wall Street firms that want to roll back protections designed to prevent another financial crisis. From an April 23 Reuters story: “Financial reform advocacy group Better Markets filed a friend-of-the-court brief on Monday in defense of a new rule curbing speculation in commodities markets that has been challenged by an industry lawsuit….Better Markets said in its legal brief that the [CFTC] agency’s main function is to protect the public and it is not obligated by law to “compare or quantify” costs and benefits.”
