Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication

Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication

Sharing National Experiences on Frameworks for Action

Side Event
Thursday, 22 March 2012
18:15 – 19:45, followed by Reception
Venue: Conference Room 2 in the North Lawn Building

Organizing Partners
• United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
• United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
• United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA)

Thematic Focus
This event, co-organised by UNEP, UNDP, and UNDESA, will focus on country action and perspectives on one of the key agenda items for Rio + 20. It will offer Member States a space for sharing experiences and knowledge about how they are creating their own approaches and shaping their national agendas with regard to the concept of a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. It seeks to enhance the state of knowledge and awareness about different policy options and initiatives that are being implemented and tested from a variety of different situations that promote employment, income and socially inclusive growth that optimizes country endowments of natural resources and positions them for prosperity in a resource constrained world. The event will also highlight links between the green economy and win-win-win local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities through the global announcement of the Equator Prize 2012 winners to be honoured in June at Rio+20.

Potential Contributions to UNCSD
The proposed event is expected to contribute to UNCSD in two ways. First, it will enable Member States to present and discuss national experiences, success stories and challenges in promoting an inclusive and equitable green economy, in view of sharing knowledge, lessons learned and contributing to fostering greater international dialogue. This is expected to inform on-going discussions on approaches that may be effective in building a common understanding about solutions and elements of a framework for action to green their economies. Second, the event will contribute to identifying specific mechanisms and support and means of implementation drawing on existing experiences, and to suggest ways through which United Nations agencies working in synergy could enhance their support to Member States.

Moderated Discussion
The side event will be a moderated discussion with speakers from Member States who will be asked to participate in an active dialogue on the issues related to the framework for action on green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. The panel will include representatives of the following countries before an open and interactive dialogue among Member States (invited – TBC): Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco, Philippines.
