India Women, Food and Climate Change Training

A NOTE FROM WEA’S CO-DIRECTORS

Dear Colleagues, Allies and Friends,

It’s official. WEA is 5. As you know, we’ll be celebrating at our Anniversary Gala “Unlocking the Future” next Wednesday, May 18th. We will hear inspirational words from Paul Hawken, Kavita Ramdas and 2010 Women and Water Participant Catherine Makane Mwengella, and enjoy live African music and a delicious organic dinner.

Our Team is just back from India where we launched a year-long training on Women, Food, and Climate Change; we are getting ready to head out the door for two Global Women’s Water Initiative trainings in Uganda in early Summer; and we are accepting applications for our 1st Annual North America Advocacy Training in November. Enjoy the stories and updates below!

All aboard!

With anticipation,

Amira & Melinda, Co-Directors
Women’s Earth Alliance

INDIA PROGRAM

The India Women, Food and Climate Change Training was launched in Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group’s training center in Campierganj in Uttar Pradesh with 31 women farmers, community organizers, campaigners and master trainers, who attended from 4 Northern Indian states. The Training focused on building the resilience of women’s farming livelihoods in the face of climate change, as well as improving their food and economic security, which are devastated by floods in this region and other parts of India.

Participants shared their own experiences with climate change as farmers and resource managers, learned about state-wide campaigns that advanced the rights of women as farmers, and visited women-managed farms where they learned green farming and natural resource management techniques. Participants designed action plans and will receive seed grants to launch projects addressing climate change and food security issues in their communities. See photos from the Training here. Many thanks to the the team of Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group—WEA’s partner in India—for their untiring efforts to host the Training.
