United Indians Newsletter-Special Pow Wow Edition

Countdown to 2010 Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow!
United Indians of All Tribes Foundation will commemorate two historic milestones at its Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow, to be held July 16-18, 2010 at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Seattle. This year marks both the 40th anniversary of the takeover at Ft. Lawton by Native activists that led to the founding of the organization, and the 25th anniversary of the annual pow wow itself.

The three-day cultural celebration featuring contest dancing and drumming, Native crafts and traditional foods, and other intertribal exhibitions is one of the largest Native American pow wows in the Pacific Northwest.

Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow Princess Applications Now Ready
The application for this year’s  Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow Princess is now available.  To be eligible, applicants must be between 13-18 years of age, possess strong cultural knowledge, and have at least a 2.5 GPA.

Sponsored by United Indians’  Elders Program, the princess competition evaluates applicants based upon their essays, public speaking, participation at the pow wow, and raffle ticket sales. As Elders Program Director Judy Anderson explains, “Being selected as our pow wow princess is a great honor. In making our selection, we try to choose the individual who best embodies the values that United Indians stands for, like traditional knowledge and connection to the cultural community, a drug and alcohol free lifestyle, and academic excellence.”

The deadline for applications is July 10, 2010 at 5 pm. For questions or to submit your applications, email Judy Anderson.

United Indians congratulates outgoing Seafair Pow Wow Princess Angelina Spencer (Colville/Navajo/Crow) on her graduation from Lake Roosevelt High School and her acceptance into the Los Angeles Art Institute. Thank you, Angelina, for representing the organization so well.

Calling All Original Ft. Lawton Invaders
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the takeover of Ft. Lawton, United Indians plans to honor the original invaders on Saturday, July 17, 2010 just after our 1pm grand entry.  All Ft. Lawton invaders are invited to this honoring.  If you know any of the original invaders, or are a surviving relative, please help us acknowledge their legacy by helping us garner as many participants as possible by spreading the word or joining us.

If you plan to participate or have any stories or acknowledgments to include in this honoring,
please let us know.

If you are interested please contact Volunteer Coordinator Amy W. at (206) 285-4425. All volunteers receive FREE admission, refreshments, loads of fun and other goodies.

Keep the Drums Beating
With the economic downturn, sponsorships for this year’s pow wow are down this year. Please consider contributing to the pow wow fund.  Every little bit helps us offset the costs of this three-day event that averages about $100,000 to put on every year. A tax-deductible donation can be mailed to United Indians of All Tribes Foundation, PO Box 99100, Seattle, WA 98139. Please note on your donation that the donation is intended for the “2010 Seafair Pow Wow Fund.”
