SPRING: Inside the Pulse

INSIDE THE PULSE
The “Behind The Scenes” update for our intimate community of board, staff, and supporters.

“With the release of our newest edition, “Earth” we declare that it is time to unite the efforts of the environmental movement with the women’s movement.”

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER

The Pulse of Spring is bursting forth in the World Pulse network with new leadership, a new U.S. office, new partnerships, and a new magazine on its way.

While we were producing our forthcoming edition, “Earth”, I was shocked to uncover how rarely women are at the center of the environmental agenda, and how rarely the environment is at the center of the women’s movement. As the primary stewards of our planet’s natural resources, women’s leadership is the natural leadership. When I spoke with renowned Indian ecological leader Vandana Shiva, she said it best: “If you look at the women’s movement from the bottom up, it has to be ecological.”

Read on to discover all the new and exciting shoots of life sprouting across the World Pulse networknow speaking out from over 150 countriesthanks to your support and leadership.

NEW CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER: JULIA PLOWMAN

We are thrilled to officially announce the appointment of Julia Plowman to lead World Pulse’s operations. Julia brings 20 years of experience in operations and marketing in the communications industry from ABC News to the Nike Foundation and the top ad firm Wieden + Kennedy. She is best known, however, for her strategic work on the award-winning Girl Effect, a campaign calling for investment in adolescent girls, which has catapulted girls onto the global agenda from Davos to the United Nations.

Julia will lead the global expansion of the World Pulse brand and solidify our operations for partnerships and scaling. Hand in hand with our team, she will lay the groundwork for World Pulse to become a leading media and communications network, powered by millions of women, driving an inclusive global agenda. Welcome, Julia!

Our current Interim Director of Operations, Janice Wong, having nimbly led and prepared World Pulse for our incoming COO, will transition over the summer into her new appointment as Director of Global Programs. Congratulations, Janice!

NEW MAGAZINE EDITION, “EARTH”

The next edition of World Pulse Magazine, Earth, is on its way! It hit the presses last week, and will be arriving in your mailboxes and available on newsstands throughout the US and Canada in mid April.

In our upcoming edition, we bring you a closer look at women transforming the environmental movement. You’ll hear from women leaders who are courageously combating environmental degradation to save their homelands, and you’ll find out about some of the most innovative eco-breakthroughs. You’ll also hear from Brazil ‘s female presidential candidate, Marina Silva; as well as Elena Milashina, one of Russia ‘s bravest journalists, and Jimmie Briggsa man leading a global movement to end violence against women.

We look forward to your feedback!

HAITI GROUP MAKES WAVES

We have just added Haitian Kreyol language translation to our community newswire, PulseWire, to facilitate our new group “Poto Mitan” which is bringing together a coalition of community leaders, activists and government officials to mobilize around the rebuilding efforts in Haiti in the aftermath of January’s earthquake. The group is now planning a summit in Haiti to look at how grassroots women leaders are seeing their role in the rebuilding, the challenges they are facing, and to determine opportunities for creating a better future for the country. The group has issued their first shadow report, which was delivered yesterday at the UN Donor’s Conference to call upon donors to include Haitian women in the reconstruction agenda.

PORTLAND KICKS OFF NATIONAL EVENTS

On April 27th, Portland , Oregon will kick off a series of intimate salons and events across the nation that will culminate in large 2011 Global Connection events. More than events, these powerful “experiences” will connect local and global networks of women worldwide. We are proud to kick off in Portland , the city that gave birth to World Pulse. At the event, we will be giving thanks to our incredible founding community of supporters and will celebrate the rising global leadership of women across the city. Hosted at the Natural Capital Center, highlights of the evening include an address from Jensine, board member Kathy LeMay on how to create a generosity plan, and Brazilian dance.

Stay tuned for additional salons in NYC, Denver , LA , the Twin Cities , and Vancouver , BC , Canada .
