20 Organizations Planting the Seeds for Food Justice in Prisons

Greetings from New Orleans!

Today, Food Tank is honoring the power of food in the lives of inmates and incarcerated individuals. While proper nutrition supports an inmate’s physical and mental health, it also is key to opening up opportunities for their successful resettlement upon release. Organizations and correctional facilities recognizing food’s role are doing more than providing healthy, sustainable meals—they’re also teaching inmates about long-term nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices through voluntary farm-based vocational training.

Food Tank is highlighting 20 organizations redesigning global incarceration with the power of food: Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, Bastøy Prison, Food Matters, Ghana Prisons Service, Harvest Now, IDEP Foundation, International Committee of the Red Cross, Michigan Department of Corrections, Mission Minimum Institution, Monroe Correctional Complex, Montana Women’s Prison, Northeastern Correctional Center, Planting Justice, Prison Harvests Project, Prison Voice Washington, Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, San Diego Prison, Sustainability in Prisons Project, Taiwan Technical Mission, and Vermont Department of Corrections.
